Using the throttle together with the tachometer lets you run economically without straining the engine unnecessarily. Many modern engines have trolling speed control. It can be hard to tell the setting by ear, but by watching the RPM you know exactly where it is set.

Engine hours: Tracking engine hours lets you schedule outboard servicing correctly. With accurate hours there is no guesswork, and the manufacturer's service schedule is easier to follow. This information is also essential when buying or selling a boat. Engine hours say a lot about the engine's age and affect the boat's price.

Fuel consumption: By monitoring fuel consumption together with speed and trim or weight distribution, you can find the boat's optimal running attitude and speed. Fuel consumption sensors are found especially in modern fuel-injected outboards. Traditionally consumption is shown in litres per hour, but many multifunction displays can also show it in litres per distance travelled.

Trim position: Adjusting trim becomes much easier when you don't have to guess its position. Most outboards of 50 hp and above have a trim position sensor as standard, and its data is sent to the NMEA 2000 bus. Note! Smaller engines often do not have a trim position sensor as standard.

Engine temperature: Monitoring engine temperature gives early warning of a possible fault. It is also good to check the temperature before running at higher speeds. Warming up the engine before heavy use extends its life and protects it from damage.

An engine may also provide other NMEA 2000 data than those listed above, such as alternator voltage or oil pressure. The ones above are the most common and usually also the most useful.

With Fimarin's engine-specific kits you get this data on your multifunction display. We offer directly compatible kits for Honda, Tohatsu, Evinrude and Yamaha engines.
