NMEA 2000 Support in Outboard Engines

Different manufacturers use different NMEA 2000 technical solutions and different connectors on their outboards. We have gathered the most common outboard models and look at their NMEA 2000 compatibility.

Tohatsu outboards

Tohatsu added NMEA 2000 support to its outboards of 40 hp and above in 2014. Unlike many other manufacturers, the connector type has stayed the same. No separate ”converter” is needed; the signal from the outboard supports the NMEA 2000 protocol directly. The Fimarin Tohatsu engine cable is compatible with Tohatsu engines. Modern 30 hp models also have NMEA 2000 support. The engine must be electric start with the type designation MFS30D. The slightly older MFS30C model can also be connected to an NMEA 2000 network using a separate adapter. The MFS30C adapter is available in our online store.

The Tohatsu engine connector is a 6-pin black industrial connector, typically found at the front of the engine under the plastic cover. The NMEA 2000 engine cable connects directly to it and is routed through the grommet at the front of the engine, like the other engine control cables.

Honda outboards

Honda has supported the NMEA 2000 standard for a long time. Supported models are outboards over 40 hp. Honda originally used a blue 6-pin male connector, but current engines have moved to a black 6-pin female connector. Honda supports NMEA 2000 natively, and no separate converters are needed. Connecting a Honda outboard to an NMEA 2000 system is straightforward: find the free 6-pin connector in the outboard's wiring harness and connect it to the engine cable. The engine cable is routed through the grommet at the front of the engine on to the boat's NMEA 2000 network. The Fimarin Honda engine cable fits newer Honda outboards directly. You can easily check your own outboard's compatibility in the serial number table below. If your engine has a blue male connector, a compatible cable is available by email order.

Yamaha outboards

Modern Yamaha engines support the NMEA 2000 standard, but different types of systems are used depending on the model and model year. In Yamaha terms these are Command Link and Command Link Plus. Command Link is directly compatible with NMEA 2000, but Command Link Plus is not directly compatible and requires its own Yamaha gateway.

Command Link => You can use the Fimarin Yamaha engine cable, Command Link connection kits or kit to add engine data to your NMEA 2000 system. Use the Command Link connection kit when you have Command Link system components installed, as you can then bring engine data into the NMEA 2000 system through the Yamaha Command Link gateway very easily.

Listed below are the compatible Yamaha models from 2006 onwards that can be connected directly to an NMEA 2000 network.
F50, T50, F60, T60, F75, F90, F115, LF115, F150, LF150, F200, LF200, F225, F250, LF250, Z150, LZ150, VZ150, Z175, Z200, LZ200, VZ225, Z250, LZ250, VZ250, Z300, LZ300, VZ300.

Note: smaller new Yamaha outboards may also support the NMEA 2000 standard. The smallest engine on which an NMEA 2000 bus has been successfully installed is a 2024 Yamaha 20 hp. If you want to connect your fairly new Yamaha under 50 hp to the bus, check whether the engine has a 4-pin, usually white, female connector with blue and white wires attached.

Command Link+ => You cannot use an engine cable directly to connect a Yamaha outboard to an NMEA 2000 system. You need Yamaha's own Command Link+ gateway. The correct part number is Yamaha MAR-GTWAY-KT-10.

Note that Command Link and Command Link Plus are completely different types of systems and must not be mixed up. Contact an authorised Yamaha dealer if you are unsure which system your outboard has.

Suzuki outboards

Suzuki outboards do not support NMEA 2000 natively and always require Suzuki's own gateway to communicate with the NMEA network. The product code of the Suzuki gateway is 990C0-88149-357, and it fits Suzuki outboards from model year 2013 onwards. We sell the Suzuki interface cable separately as well as a complete kit that includes the interface cable.

Mercury outboards

Just like Suzuki, Mercury requires its own gateway. Mercury calls its data system SmartCraft. The suitable adapter is called SmartCraft Connect. From the SmartCraft Connect module you can route engine data into your system with an NMEA 2000 cable. SmartCraft Connect must be purchased separately from a Mercury dealer. We recommend our basic NMEA 2000 kit to complete your Mercury system.

Evinrude outboards

Evinrude has supported the NMEA 2000 standard in its E-TEC engines since 2006. Supported models are 200 hp and larger engines from 2006, and 50 hp and larger from 2008 onwards. Evinrude uses a 4-pin flat connector, with the female side located on the outboard. For Evinrude engines, an NMEA 2000 cable is available. The cable is made to order due to low demand. A complete kit for Evinrude is not currently available, but the engine cable combined with our basic NMEA 2000 kit works excellently.

The cable kits come in 2–6 metre variations for both the engine cable and the drop cable.
